Urgent measures are needed to save the earth from the destruction caused by climate change. Photo: File

Currently, it is summer season all over Pakistan and severe heat is being felt in Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) including the federal capital Islamabad.

Severe heat wave and its dangers are predicted from May 21 to 27. The heat wave will affect the plains of Sindh and Punjab, with temperatures reaching between 45 and 50 degrees Celsius in many cities. On the one hand, the citizens are worried due to the increasing heat wave, on the other hand, their problems have increased due to the increase in the duration of load shedding.

On the other hand, scientists have warned that urgent measures need to be taken to protect the earth from the destruction caused by climate change, there is also a need to know whether there is climate change and how it is affecting our environment. Human activities have increased the emission of carbon dioxide, due to which the global temperature is increasing at an alarming rate, due to which the earth is now going through a period of rapid climate change.

Climate change will change the way we live, causing water scarcity and making it harder to grow food. Some regions may become dangerously hot and others may become uninhabitable due to sea level rise. Heat waves are felt in many areas due to increased heat intensity and shut down winds. , which has also increased the chances of people getting ‘heat stroke’.

The temperature in Lahore is exceeding 42 degrees Celsius. As the heat intensity has increased in Lahore, the diseases have also increased. Complaints of gastro and diarrhea are being reported among patients in government hospitals. Remember that in 2015, heatwaves killed more than 1 thousand people in Karachi city alone. In general, working or moving around in the heat of the sun continuously increases the temperature of the human body during summer season and increases the chances of suffering from heat stroke.

On the other hand, the Meteorological Department has warned that more than normal rains are expected across the country in this year’s monsoon season. The pre-monsoon season is going to start after 10 days from Saturday, more than normal rains are expected across the country. The return of rain system ‘La Nina’ will cause record breaking rains in South Asia.

Due to which there may be rains like 2020 and 2021 in Sindh. In this regard, the South Asia Forum has released its prediction. The report said that there is a possibility of more than normal rainfall in most parts of South Asia during June to September. Less than normal rainfall is likely in the eastern and northeastern parts of the region. Like other countries, more than normal rains are expected in Pakistan during monsoon.

Very soon the pre-monsoon rains will start, due to the heavy rains in this season, the rivers and streams will overflow and flood. The intensity of rains has increased since and there are continuous rains even without the season.

This clearly means that the duration of disasters and losses caused by rains and floods has increased, which has negative effects on the country’s economy, which has become a source of concern for governments and administrations, as a part of the government budget. A large part is being spent on repairing the damages caused by the floods.

On the other hand, the quality of performance of our local, district and provincial government institutions is declining instead of improving. People are suffering the consequences of mismanagement, imbalance in institutional powers and duties.

We have a plethora of government institutions, the number of officers and employees of municipal and provincial institutions is in thousands. They are paid billions of rupees every month in salaries and perks from the public exchequer, but their quality of performance and diligence is very low.

There are heaps of urban problems in Lahore, the Municipal Corporation used to be powerful here, but then its subsidiaries have been separated and made into different companies, thus the Municipal Corporation has become crippled.

The grounds and parks of the city of Lahore are not under its control, the sewage system is not under its control, the parking areas are not under its control, the transport system of the city is not there, thus the Lahore Municipal Corporation has remained a mere name. Due to which Lahore is suffering from the worst pollution.

Every year before the monsoon rains, huge government and administrative claims come up, but when the rains come, the fortress of all these claims is thrown open and all the claims are left behind. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Tehreek-e-Insaf has established a provincial government for the third time in a row, while PPP has a fourth consecutive provincial government in Sindh.

In Sindh, the water of the previous flood does not recede until another flood occurs. In addition to the NFC award, the federal government pays billions of rupees to the provincial governments of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in several other periods, but despite the passage of seventy years, these provinces are backward, the infrastructure is non-existent, the number of employees of the provincial governments is in thousands, but tax collection is negligible.

It is not known where these billions of rupees are spent. The efficiency of local bodies and preventive measures are negligible. Heavy monsoon rains cause floods, with farmers suffering the most. Global warming, climate change and climate change in the region, according to experts, will increase the intensity of rains and increase the risk of floods. Going, here the question arises that what strategy has been adopted by the federal government and provincial governments of Pakistan so far to prevent these possible situations? Now, due to the rapid increase in population, the ground is unable to absorb water because high-rise buildings have been built everywhere.

Even the sewage drains are open which get filled during the rainy season and their polluted water is seen flowing in the streets and streets without any arrangement to remove it. Which gives rise to many harmful health diseases. Not only this, but this dirty water also enters people’s houses. Now tell how a common man can enjoy the seasons or the mercy of rain.

Like every year, the meteorological department warns that rains can bring disaster, but departments and institutions that do not see or care about their own interests do not take any appropriate measures to deal with these disasters. Water is neither stored nor managed. Where the world has advanced so much in technology, we are still surrounded by our basic problems, if we talk about developed countries, rains. There are also but those countries enjoy this season regularly due to their excellent and modern infrastructure.

Our concerned authorities should do the following to move towards resolving the issues. Special attention should be paid to drainage at the time of construction, construction projects should be completed early or delayed so that the excavated area does not create other problems. Rainwater should be stored as much as possible to avoid water scarcity in future. Special attention should be paid to the cleanliness of rivers, recreational areas, streets and neighborhoods so that there is no problem in the flow of water in rainy season. Small dams should be built to prevent excess water from being wasted by throwing it into the sea.

All areas should be sprayed during rainy days to get rid of mosquitoes breeding in standing water. Rain is a mercy of Allah Ta’ala, it should not be turned into a burden. Now it is up to us how we solve the problems. Also make things easier for yourself and others. We can solve these problems only by adopting proper strategies and taking courage to fulfill our responsibilities.
