Defamation Bill 2024 passed in Punjab Assembly, all opposition amendments rejected

The Punjab Assembly passed the Defamation Bill 2024, the bill was presented by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman.

Advocate General Punjab Khalid Ishaq answered the main points of the bill and the objections of the opposition, all the amendments of the opposition were rejected.

The opposition called the bill a black law and tore copies of the bill in protest.

Journalists also walked out from the press gallery, journalists protested on the steps of the assembly against the bill and called for a nationwide protest.

Provincial Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman presented the bill in the Punjab Assembly, during which the opposition members raised noise and the journalists boycotted the proceedings of the House.

After completing the agenda, the speaker adjourned the meeting indefinitely.

Defamation Bill 2024, the bill will apply to print, electronic and social media, defamation case can be filed on false, untrue news spread.

The bill will also apply to fake news spread through YouTube and social media, action will be taken on news spread to harm privacy, public space.

Tribunals will be set up for defamation cases, which will be bound to decide within 6 months. Under the defamation bill, the damages will be Rs 30 lakh.

Under the Defamation Bill, 2024, the High Court bench will be able to hear cases against persons holding constitutional positions.

The government rejected the proposal of journalistic organizations to delay the bill, the journalistic organizations had demanded to delay the bill for a few days in a meeting with the Information Minister today.
