The first phase of general elections in India begins, voting in 21 states

New Delhi: Polling is going on in 21 states in the first phase of general elections in India.

According to Indian media, votes are being cast in 21 states for 102 Lok Sabha (Parliament) seats. Lok Sabha elections consist of 7 phases.

The states where the first phase of elections have started include Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and others.

In the Indian elections, a tough competition is expected between Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s alliance with the BJP and other parties, the NDA and the opposition parties, the Alliance of India. The extremist BJP has claimed victory in 370 out of 543 Lok Sabha seats in the elections.

In the last elections, the BJP won 303 seats and its alliance won a total of 353 seats.
