Wheat import figures and relief to farmers

It was March 2018 when Pakistan exported two and a half lakh metric tons of wheat. In the next month of April 2018, about 5 lakh metric tons of wheat worth 9.64 million dollars was exported. Wheat production targets are determined by January, February every year. Along with this the decision of import or export is taken.

In the month of March, wheat harvesting also starts in many areas of the country, this year the situation is very different. A new government was formed in early March. For many years, the country was moving from the list of wheat exporting countries to the list of importing countries.

Since May 2022, the price of flour in the country has been increasing continuously. Flour, which is the main ingredient of food and its most important, the most important food of Pakistan is flour, the price of which has increased from 90 rupees per kg in early 2022 to 150 rupees per kg by December 2022. was

Meanwhile, the new crop of 2023 also entered the market, but the price of flour was not decreasing. In November, December 2023, farmers across the country started wheat cultivation on a large scale. During this time he had to face many difficulties. The most expensive fertilizers were used, the drugs were fake or genuine but in any case the most expensive, electricity rates were increasing so that the bill of tubewells started talking to the sky. By March, it was known that a record wheat crop was about to be achieved.

The government has set up wheat procurement centers and fixed the rate at Rs 3900 per maund. April had just started when it was reported that more than 1 million tonnes of wheat had been imported, so the record crop of wheat in the country and excess imports had created a wheat crisis. Now how much wheat was imported and in which month how much was imported? To check its record, let’s look at the import data published by PBS on a monthly basis.

In March 2024, 6 lakh 91 thousand 136 metric tons of wheat was imported. In February 2024, 7 lakh 78 thousand 112 metric tons of wheat was imported. In January 2024, 6 lakh 13 thousand 147 metric tons of wheat was imported. In December 2023, 3 lakh 12 thousand 399 metric tons of wheat was imported. Similarly, 4 lakh 97 thousand 734 metric tons of wheat was imported in November 2023. In October 2023, 3 lakh 94 thousand 602 metric tons of wheat was imported.

Domestic production was also there, but many other factors were also present. There were possibilities of increase in the price of flour in the country, so the government was continuously importing as much wheat as required every month. We now look to May 2023 and beyond. 51 thousand metric tons of wheat was imported in May 2023 and 146 thousand 873 metric tons of wheat was imported in April 2023.

Similarly, 3 lakh 28 thousand 453 metric tons of wheat was imported in March 2023. Because at that time the government’s assessment was correct that the country needed wheat otherwise the price of flour would increase further. Although at that time flour was getting 150 rupees per kg. Had it not been for this import, flour would have gone up to Rs 190 per kg.

In September 2023, the caretaker government had come in, many economic reforms were started, in which the reduction of the dollar rate was significant, along with the focus on the increase in exports and increased it. But the price of flour could not be reduced and flour was still available at Rs 170 per kg. There were no wheat imports in these 3 months till June, July, August 2023.

Therefore, the caretaker government estimated the demand for the future and started the series of imports and started the series of imports by importing 162 thousand 301 metric tons of wheat in September 2023 which continued till March 2024. But the March 2024 imports are being called controversial.

In fact, every year, February and March are very important in this regard, what will be the production target of wheat? How much will be needed and imports or exports are also decided, so we show the data for February and March 2022 and 2021, in March 2022 one hundred and twelve thousand metric tons of wheat was imported.

3 lakh 28 thousand 122 metric tons of wheat was imported in February 2022 and 2 lakh 29 thousand 696 metric tons of wheat was imported in March 2021. In February 2021, 4 lakh 18 thousand 699 metric tons of wheat was imported. All these figures should be taken into account, every month the imports were as much as needed and in March of this year, no very large quantity of wheat was imported, although this import was not required, but we got this wheat along with it. Record production has also been achieved and the best part is that mill flour has come down from Rs 170 to Rs 130 per kg and other flour has come down from Rs 160 per kg.

In this regard, some shopkeepers said that now flour has reached 110 rupees per kg, but despite all these things, there are talks of an increase soon. The government should thank Allah Almighty that flour has become cheap.

Now make every possible effort to compensate the farmers for their hard work. Minimize wasteful government spending, privileges of elites and others. Relief should be provided to the farmers immediately by releasing money from the government treasury. They should be compensated for their hard work. Mafia and others together have bought wheat from them at cheap prices, although the investigation takes time, but the issue here is to give them immediate relief. Immediate financial assistance.

Is to buy wheat immediately. Make the farmer happy, make him prosperous, keep the price of flour down to bring down inflation. However, wheat has increased, so now it is the responsibility of the government to manage it. Apart from this, keeping the results of the investigation in front, it is also the job of the government to plan the future properly.
