Handlova: Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot in an assassination attempt and is in critical condition.

According to the report of the news agency Reuters, the statement released by the government of Slovakia said that Prime Minister Robert Fico was assassinated after a meeting in the government office in Handlova, as a result of which he was seriously injured.

Slovakian media said the 71-year-old suspect opened fire, but the motive was not immediately clear.

The report said that 59-year-old Robert Fico was presiding over a meeting in Handlova and came out of the building after the meeting when he was attacked and taken to a hospital in the central town of Slovac with injuries.

Later, he was transferred by helicopter to the regional capital of Banska Bystrica for emergency medical assistance, where his condition is said to be critical.

Witnesses said that as soon as Robert Fico came out of the building and shook hands with people there, the shooting broke out and three to four shots were fired, after which the police arrested a suspect.
