Stephen Colbert has finally faced the backlash since Kate Middleton announced the tragic news of her cancer diagnosis.
The talk show host landed in hot water after Kate revealed she had cancer after making a cruel joke about the Princess of Wales’ disappearance rumours.
During a recent episode of his show, The Late Show with Stephen Colberthe linked Kate’s rumored disappearance to Prince William’s alleged affair with Rose Hanbury.
After Kate revealed why she hadn’t been seen in public since Christmas, social media users called for the talk show host to apologize to the mother-of-three.
Addressing the backlash, he said during his show on Monday, “You know, guys, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we do a lot of shows and I tell a lot of jokes, and I tell jokes about a lot of people. Different things, mostly what everyone else is talking about.
“And for the last six weeks to two months, everyone has been talking about the mystery of Kate Middleton’s disappearance from public life,” he added.
“And two weeks ago, we made some jokes about this mystery and all the reporting about it. And when I made those jokes, it upset some people and — with his diagnosis coming out. Already, and I can understand that.
“I mean, a lot of my jokes have upset people in the past. And I’m sure some of my jokes will upset people in the future.” “But there is one standard that I try to hold myself to. And that is that I don’t make light of someone else’s tragedy.
He sent his best wishes to Kate, Princess of Wales, and regretted the insensitive joke that repeated an old rumor that would have had a negative effect on the princess at such a tragic time.
“Now, I don’t know if her prognosis is tragic, she’s the future queen of England and I think she’s going to get the best possible medical attention, but regardless of what it is,” Colbert said.
