TRAI has introduced new guidelines for mobile number porting. It will come into effect from July 1.

Telecom regulator TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) announced its changes. Mobile number portability (MNP)mobile number porting rules last week. According to the latest amendment, if the SIM card is changed or replaced, the respective mobile number cannot be ported to another telecom operator for seven days. This is the ninth new amendment since the inception of the MNP Regulations. The new regulations are aimed at curbing and reducing SIM swap fraud in the country. The new rules will be applicable from July 1.

According to the new regulations, customers are not allowed to port their mobile number to another telecom operator if they have changed or changed their SIM card in the last seven days. TRAI said in a circular that these regulations are aimed at preventing fake SIM swapping or mobile number porting by corrupt elements.

It has also introduced an additional criterion for rejecting a request for Unique Porting Code (UPC) allocation which is required for porting a mobile number from one telecom operator to another. TRAI says that UPC should not be allocated if the UPC application is made before the expiry of seven days from the date of change of SIM or change of mobile number.

The latest TRAI regulation will come into effect from July 1. The MNP regulations were first introduced in 2009.

Users can change their service provider without changing their mobile number through MNP facility. They can initiate the porting process by sending an SMS in the format Port <دس ہندسوں والا موبائل نمبر> By 1900. This will generate a UPC and the user will receive it via SMS. This can be used to request MNP.
