How are dolphins saved from death in Sindh?

The world’s rarest blind dolphin is a mystery and a giant for the people of Sindh, the Sindh Wildlife Department does a great job of relocating them to a safe place during winters due to lack of water.

The first regular survey of dolphins in Pakistan was carried out in 1974 by Prof. Giorgio Pilleri of Switzerland and counted 150 dolphins, after which an aquatic sanctuary was established for dolphins.

Only in Pakistan

There have been 4 species of dolphins in freshwater, of which only 3 species can be seen now. The blind dolphin was once found in some canal areas of Punjab apart from Sindh, but now it is restricted only to Sukkur and Guddu barrage in upper Sindh.

The Pakistani dolphin is not found anywhere else in the world. For a long time, the blind dolphin was hunted by local fishermen for its blubber, which posed a serious threat to its species, but now its numbers have declined. There has been a substantial increase.

The reason for being seen?

Experts say that the blind dolphins found in Gaddu and Sukkur Barrage in the Indus River are affected by the muddy water of the Indus River, causing them to become blind. Blind dolphin is also known as Bhalan in Sindhi language and Sindh wildlife department is taking steps to protect this rare aquatic life.

How are dolphins saved from death?

Adnan Hamid said that the Indus dolphin has a blow hole on its head which it opens when it gets into trouble. The blowhole burst open, forcing water into her body and into her lungs, causing her to die instantly. “So we have to rescue the dolphin before it opens the blowhole and it’s a 60 to 80 second period, in which we have to rescue it.”

He said that “Rescuing Indus dolphins is a highly skilled job. The dolphins are brought out with nets in shallow water. If the water is more than 4 feet, the chances of survival are reduced.” ‘

How many Indus dolphins are there now?

Sindh Wildlife Conservator Mohammad Adnan says that the number of blind dolphins in Sindh was around 900 in 2009, which has now increased to 1,900. Due to lack of water in the river Indus in winter, these dolphins often float in small canals and get stuck in the bushes, which are rescued and brought back to Sukkur barrage.

Experts say that until a few years ago, its species was under serious threat, but due to the awareness created by various organizations and the government at the public level and the prevention of its hunting, their numbers are increasing every year.

It should be noted that the world’s rare blind dolphin is a priceless gift of nature for Pakistan, its protection is the responsibility of all of us.
