What is meningitis? Precautions and treatment
Meningitis can happen to anyone, but children are more at risk, but even older people cannot consider themselves safe from it.
Public health expert Dr. Muhammad Sulaiman Otho informed the viewers about the symptoms and treatment of meningitis and its causes in the ARY News program, Awabar Sawira.
He said that meningitis is basically an acute inflammation of the protective membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord, also known as the meninges.
Its common symptoms include fever, headache with stiff neck, other symptoms include confusion, tension, vomiting and intolerance to bright lights or loud noises.
“It’s a potentially life-threatening infection where swelling develops around your brain and spinal cord,” he said. This inflammation can disrupt the normal functioning of the nervous system.
Dr Sulaiman Otho said that meningitis caused by viral or bacterial infection can be very serious and the patient needs immediate medical attention as soon as possible.
He said that people who have weak immunity are more likely to get meningitis.
