Tehran: Iran’s renowned award-winning filmmaker Mohammad Rasolov has been sentenced to eight years in prison, flogging and heavy fines.
The film director’s lawyer said in a statement released on social media that the court has convicted Rasulov of national security crimes and ordered the confiscation of his property.
Mohammad Rasulov was supposed to attend the Cannes Film Festival for the screening of his film, but now he will not be able to attend.
According to Human Rights Watch, Iranian authorities have previously arrested the filmmaker several times and confiscated his passport.
Criticizing Rasulov’s sentence, the Filmmakers Association of Iran called the court decision a game of stubbornness and revenge.
