Beijing: During heavy rains in China, a section of the highway was washed away, resulting in a sinkhole, killing 48 people.
According to China’s official news agency Xinhua, several vehicles fell into a 59-foot-deep ditch from the main highway in the city of Meizhou in the southern province of Guangdong.
Vehicles were removed by crane. Several vehicles were burnt while around 80 people were shifted to hospital. Initially 24 and later 48 people were confirmed dead.
More than 30 people are also injured in this accident, out of which 8 are in critical condition, and the death toll is expected to increase. Several passengers’ limbs were separated from their bodies.
The spokesman of the rescue operation says that rains have been continuing in this area for several days. Due to which a part of the road was washed away and there was a pit and the vehicles passing there fell into the ditch.
