Contemporary songs have less vocabulary and more repetition, research

Vienna: A new study has revealed that if you compare the popular songs of today and the old songs, there have been major changes in the songs of the present day.

According to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports, when comparing today’s popular songs to the 40 best songs from previous decades, contemporary songs have changed significantly over the past 50 years.

Research shows that today’s popular songs have simpler lyrics and more repetition than songs of the past.

Eva Zingerli, senior author of the study and professor of computer science at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, said that current songs have too much repetition and simplicity of words with no depth.

He also said that we have found in research that this change or trend in singers has occurred since the 1970s and that this trend is among the five most popular music genres in the English language such as pop, rock, rap, R&B and country. .

Eva and her fellow researchers analyzed the lyrics of 353,320 well-known songs released between 1970 and 2020. They used AI to analyze the linguistic features of these songs such as the proportion of repeated words, emotional messages, comprehensible lyrics and vocabulary.
