Iraq approves law punishing homosexuality with 15 years in prison

In Iraq, 3 years for sex reassignment and 7 years for promoting homosexuality

Baghdad: In Iraq, homosexuality was made a crime punishable by a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 years.

According to Arab media, Iraq’s parliament has passed a law criminalizing homosexuality with a maximum of 15 and a minimum of 10 years in prison.

Similarly, 3 years imprisonment for sex reassignment operation, 7 years imprisonment for promoting homosexuality and prostitution in any way.

It should be noted that this bill initially included the death penalty for homosexuals, but after strong opposition from the United States and European countries, the bill was amended and the punishment was increased to 15 years in prison.

The bill states that the aim of this initiative is to maintain religious values in the country. Iraqi society is to be protected from the demands of moral depravity and homosexuality that have gripped the world.

On the other hand, the homosexual community in Iraq called the law against freedom of expression and said it was a serious blow to basic human rights.

Note that homosexuality is legal in more than 130 countries, while more than 60 countries criminalize homosexuality.
