The Federal Minister of Energy asked the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for an appointment

Federal Energy Minister Owais Khan Laghari has sought an appointment with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.

Owais Khan Laghari has written to Ali Amin Gandapur and has asked for time to meet on measures to stop electricity theft.

The federal minister said that the meeting will consider improving the situation through a joint strategy.

He further said that the help of the police should be provided to stop electricity theft in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the campaign against electricity theft can be made successful with the help of the police.

Owais Leghari also said in the letter that I request you to take personal interest for the cooperation of the police.

He said that Pesco and Tesco operating in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were among the worst performing discos, whose losses were estimated at Rs 188 billion in the current financial year.

The federal minister said that a campaign has been launched to stop electricity theft, reduce losses and improve recoveries. The success of the campaign depends on the cooperation of the provincial governments.

He said that the losses have put a question mark on the sustainability of the power sector, with the challenge of weak government enforcement in the areas under Tesco’s control.

Owais Leghari said in the letter that the provincial government should formulate a comprehensive plan for recovery in Tesco areas as a possible solution.

He said that another possible solution is for the provincial government to take over the power supply in Tesco areas.
