A rare gold watch from the ill-fated Titanic that sank on its maiden voyage has been auctioned for a record price.

According to foreign media reports, the said watch was found on the body of John Jacob Astor (JJA), the richest man in the world at that time, aboard the Titanic.

Recently, the British company Henry Aldridge & Son put up for auction the valuable watch belonging to the passenger of the ill-fated ship.

The gold watch fetched a record price of 1.17 million pounds ($2.23 million) at an auction in the UK.

The watch, inscribed with the initials ‘JJA’ of richest passenger John Jacob Astor, has fetched the highest price among artefacts recovered from the 1912 sinking of the Titanic.

The record was previously held by a violin that sold for £1.1 million in 2013.

A violin bag belonging to ship’s bandmaster Wallace Hartley was also up for auction during a recent auction, which sold for £290,000.
