In-display fingerprint scanners have been on smartphones for years. Ultrasonic and optical scanners are two technologies that work similarly to biometric authentication. The first is usually found on premium flagship smartphones and the second can come on regular phones. Tipster says opposite, OnePlus and Realme are working on ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint scanners for their devices. If all goes well, the technology will replace optical fingerprint scanners on the brand’s upcoming devices. The tipster did not share any other information.

Currently, Samsung Galaxy S23 series, iQOO 12 Pro, Meizu 21/21 Pro and others use this technology. However, ultrasonic fingerprint scanners are expensive to manufacture and the process is more difficult than optical fingerprint scanners.
