A volcano spewing thousands of dollars worth of gold every day

Although it sounds like a dream, it is true. Mount Erebus, a volcano in Antarctica, is spewing gold nuggets every day and each nugget is worth $6,000.

Satellite images show a lava-based lake under Mount Erebus that has been erupting since 1972. The eruption is regularly emitting gas and steam flames outwards and ejecting partially molten rock.

As the gas rushes out, small pieces of gold are scattered across the sky along with it and fall to the ground as rain. According to scientists, the volcano spews out about 80 grams of gold a day, which is worth about $6,000.

These gold nuggets fall hundreds of miles from Mount Erbus. Researchers in Antarctica have detected gold-based dust in the atmosphere 621 miles from the volcano. According to a 2017 study, there are 138 volcanoes in Antarctica, of which about nine are reported to be active, and Mount Erbus is one of the most famous.

The mountain was discovered in 1841 and has an elevation of 12,448 feet (3,794 m). It is also one of the three volcanic mountains that together form Ross Island in Antarctica.

The US-run Mount Erebus Volcanic Observatory still monitors the volcano and sends expeditions to look for signs of life. The observatory is located about 25 miles south of Mount Erebus.
