Common Reasons for Failure in Exams

Exam failure involves many internal, external and psychological factors. (Photo: File)

Student failure in exams is a very broad topic and has many common causes. In the article under consideration, we will examine the same detailed points to know why students eventually fail the exam.

Lack of interest of students in studies

In fact, not every child is a reader and this is a fact. Many of our students are not interested in going to school and college. Many students suffer from absent-mindedness in the class as well. Due to this lack of interest, they fail on exam days. They do not take interest in studies and do not remember daily lessons.

Not choosing the right subjects

Often students are not allowed to choose subjects of their choice, mainly due to parental pressure. Most parents consciously want their children to become doctors or engineers of their choice, while the child may want to pursue fine arts or have a passion for English literature. When children are not allowed to take subjects according to their choice, they want to get rid of studying as a burden and when studying becomes a burden, it is a failure.

Resource scarcity and poverty

Poverty is the biggest tragedy of our country. Millions of children are out of school and most students lack adequate resources, meaning they cannot even afford textbooks, let alone guide books. In case you don’t have complete textbooks, no stationery, no notes then teaching can’t be continued at all and students fail in exams.

Teachers not understanding the mental capacity of students

There are students of different intelligence in the same classroom but the teachers teach all the children in the same way, while some children need more attention and memorize a lesson quickly. In this case, it is not correct to treat all in the same way and children who need special attention may not perform well in examinations when they also receive general attention.

Parents being clueless and blaming teachers

Both parents and teachers have a hand in the success of children, but most of us parents feel it necessary to inform themselves about the child’s performance only on the day of the result. They think that once the school, college or academy fees have been paid, now all the responsibility is on the teachers. While this never happens. Children are rarely asked by parents to study at home, even though 9th and 10th are the two classes on which a child’s entire career depends. Even then, if the parents do not monitor the children and do not encourage the children to study, then the children cannot perform well in the exams.

Teachers paying less attention to the class

Many teachers have opened their own academies and tuition centers. Granted, it is not wrong, but such teachers teach the children who come to their tuition centers well and do not show much attention in class. Even children who are neglected barely pass the exams.

Use of social media and other electronic devices

Granted that modern age is the age of social media and our new generation is always glued to mobile. But everyone knows that mobile is used more for entertainment and less for education. Children tend to focus on the same tools even while studying and the result is that they fail.

Fear of exams

Exams are something that more or less every student dreads, no matter how talented they are. Exam phobia is a bitter truth. Many students study well on normal days but cannot perform well in the exam room because they are afraid of exams and forget everything they remember.

Not knowing the technique of solving the paper

There is a technique to solve each subject paper and unfortunately this technique is not taught in our institutions. Children should be told how and how much time will be required if there are MCQs, if there is a topic wise paper then what will be the procedure to solve it. Time management, understanding the question better and then solving it leads to success.

Online education

Many people think of online education as a success, but I don’t think so. During the Corona epidemic, schools around the world remained open with precautionary measures, but in Pakistan, online education system was heavily emphasized. No matter how hard a teacher works, the importance of schools and madrasas for students will always remain in place. There is a world of difference between having a teacher physically present in the classroom and teaching and online learning.

Stress and medical problems

Most of the students suffer from mental stress when the exams come. Many medical problems also arise, especially problems like dizziness, indigestion and physical weakness. Many students suffer from physical disorders in the exam room. The burden of exams is so much that they cannot bear the pressure and get sick.

Reading by rote without understanding

Generally speaking, the curriculum is not in tune with the modern methods but it would be fair to say that the textbooks are mostly boring. When students are bored, they read and memorize things without understanding their concepts. This means that only memory is tested. Sometimes it happens that in the exam room, the first word of a question that is written is forgotten, then the entire answer is forgotten and the students fail in the papers.

Comparison of parents with other children

One of the flaws of our society is that parents always compete with children against their siblings or family members, but many teachers do too. This does not inculcate good behavior in the students. They want to study and score only because their so-and-so sibling or cousin scored higher than them, so now they have to do the same.

Pressure from parents

Parents put a lot of pressure on children near exams and in many homes it is also said that if you fail and do not get enough grades with good marks, our family will be cut off or you will be put on some business. This thing is like a psychological attack on the students, the parents think that the result will be good but the result is opposite.

Solved Papers and Guides

Generally guides and five years solved papers are given much importance. But if you look at the guides, relatively easy questions are solved and the same is written about the difficulty to solve the rest of the questions in the same way. Now a student who is finding the question difficult and can’t even find it in the guide, how can he expect to crack the exam.

There are many reasons for failure in short exams, including many internal, external and psychological factors. Both teachers and parents have an important role in the success of children, so both should give equal attention to the children.
