The United States vetoed the resolution of Palestine’s permanent membership in the United Nations

Geneva: Despite the support of the majority in the Security Council, the United States vetoed the resolution of Palestine’s permanent membership in the United Nations using its special authority.

According to the World News Agency, the resolution to give Palestine permanent membership in the United Nations was presented by Algeria in the Security Council. 12 member states, including the United Kingdom and Switzerland, voted in favor of the resolution.

President Mahmoud Abbas, who represented Palestine in the Security Council meeting, said in his address that the people of Palestine want to live freely with peace and security in an independent state and wish to find a long-term solution to the problem.

On the other hand, while vetoing the resolution, the spokesperson of the US State Department said that it is not yet time because the question is still unresolved whether Palestine meets the procedures regarding the permanent membership of the United Nations.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas strongly protested against the United States’ veto of Palestine’s permanent membership in the United Nations, saying that the United States has robbed the Palestinians of their rights.

It should be remembered that the United States initially put a lot of pressure on the member countries to stop the voting on this resolution in order to protect itself from the stigma of the veto, but the referendum was held today and the majority voted in favor.
