Lahore: The traders of dairy products demanded a complete ban on the import of powdered milk or an increase in the import duty.
Other organisations, including Dairy and Cattle Farming, Corporate Dairy Farming Association, Kisan Board and Buffalo Breeders urged the federal government to phase out the import of dry milk to prevent closure of cattle rearers’ businesses and dairy companies.
He said that the dairy farming sector in the country is already in dire straits, the rest of the deficit is being met by importing dry milk and reducing customs duty.
He said that the dry milk importing companies have proposed to further reduce the duty on import in the next budget, increasing the import of dry milk and reducing the duty will harm the local industry.
According to the sources, 12 plants produce dry milk in the country and their daily production is 10,000 bags. 75% duty is imposed on the import of dry milk from European countries, 30% on import from Malaysia, which is proposed to be reduced to 20%.
