Climate change and conservation measures

Another western wind system has entered Pakistan, due to which rains are continuing in Balochistan, Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Unexpected rains are happening due to rapidly changing weather due to climatic and environmental changes. Due to the rain, the electricity feeders tripped in several areas, while the wheat crop was also damaged by the rain, while many people were killed due to being washed away in the flood channels and struck by lightning.

Rains are nature’s gift to us, but sometimes due to heavy rains, the rivers overflow and the mud houses collapse, similarly floods are one of the natural calamities. In this calamity, a strong flow of water or rila that sweeps everything away with it, destruction is certain wherever the flood passes.

Millions of people are displaced and the financial loss is difficult to assess immediately. Floods cause a lot of economic damage to the country and lead to depression. Apart from this, many epidemic diseases also break out among the victims on a large scale. The rainy season in the summer and the hours-long torrential downpours of the monsoons change the landscape of cities even today.

In fact, for the past few years, climatic changes have been taking place all over the world, and Pakistan has also been affected by it. Now Pakistan’s weather is also getting hotter and other natural disasters including floods, droughts, earthquakes and torrential rains are becoming more frequent than before.

This climate change has directly affected agricultural production. Deficiency of rain, excess or extreme heat and cold are damaging the crops and since our farmer is not aware of these changes in weather, he is not able to protect his crop from the weather changes, hence his labor and earnings are lost. The chances increase.

Precious human lives are lost every year due to increase in heat intensity, but still our government’s strategy is not being implemented. Experts say that planting trees is the easiest solution to avoid climate change, but the sad thing is that while we are planting new trees here, we are also cutting down existing trees.

The trees on the banks of the rivers are the best and natural means of flood prevention, but here too we cut down these trees showing short-sightedness. Every year, how many acres of agricultural land, residential houses, livestock and human lives are affected by floods, but we do not take preventive measures on the basis of external assistance.

According to experts, due to global warming, climate change and changes in the region’s climate, the intensity of rains and the risk of flooding are increasing, and now once again due to climate change, the risk of heavy rains and large-scale floods is increasing. Being felt, the question arises here, what strategy has the government adopted so far to prevent these possible situations?

Pakistan has faced two of the worst floods in its history in the past twelve years, but despite this disaster, adequate policies or strategies have been formulated in view of climate change and the threats it poses to the country through official platforms. Has not been done.

Pakistan’s share of global carbon emissions is less than one percent, but we are on the cusp of climate change-induced disasters. It is alarming that there are more than 7,000 glaciers in Pakistan, while glaciers in the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush range are melting rapidly.

In the areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, about 3000 glaciers have formed lakes, that is, these rivers have formed due to the melting of glaciers. Out of these three thousand, there are about three dozen rivers that can flood at any time. In fact, climate change cannot be stopped, but it can be prevented.

We first began to cut down the forests indiscriminately, began to take immense amounts of sand and gravel from the rivers, which brought salt water back to the surface of the rivers. In Pakistan, coal is commonly used in brick kilns, in addition to being burned in factory boilers and especially in thermal power generation plants, in addition to burning gas commonly known as sui as a fuel in homes. The use of gas is also common in Pakistan.

Its use is dangerous and harmful to smoke vapors, atmosphere, health and buildings. Industrial areas often produce fog, or smog, which causes difficulty in seeing and breathing and reduces visibility. The drivers of this fog include climate and weather change, but also industrial smoke, actually water vapor condenses on it to create smog.

For some time, eye irritation, difficulty in breathing, cough, throat, nose and ear diseases and lung diseases are common in Karachi and Lahore and the number of allergy patients is increasing continuously, countless people have become victims of these diseases. And gradually, how these toxic gases harm our environment and our health. Instead of remedying it, we are busy polluting the environment day and night.

We have not made adequate arrangements for the disposal of industrial wastes and emissions which are polluting the air as well as adding to water and posing a threat to human life as most factories dispose of their industrial waste in unsafe ways. and since there is poor planning and strategy at the government level too, often this toxic material causes many diseases in the population in the vicinity of the industrial areas. These toxic and harmful gases and substances are also one of the causes of climate change which is not being noticed.

Urban flooding is a natural reaction of drainage systems and waterways. This happens when the drainage channels get clogged. Rivers and streams can no longer accommodate the excess water generated by extreme weather conditions. Drainage channels then rise above their natural or artificial banks and water enters surrounding areas, causing urban flooding and flooding, while human activities that damage the environment, e.g. As lack of greenery, deforestation and poor waste disposal practices increase the risks.

To improve water management and protect sewage systems from damage, cities need measures such as improving underground pipelines and drainage systems. The separation of rainwater from the sewerage system is able to function properly without having to bear the load of heavy rainwater.

Cleaning of sewers and drains is a very important task that needs to be done regularly, as is the supply of drinking water to the residents of a city, apart from sewage system waste, debris, shopping bags, tree roots and leaves. can be filled with Similarly, old, worn, cracked and rusted pipes and drains are more prone to deterioration, adding to the problem, so it is imperative to replace them before they expire.

The government should implement environmental programs and projects with seriousness and consistency. To protect the environment, the approved laws should be strictly implemented and amendments and new laws should be passed according to the current environmental situation. To deal with climate change, national environmental experts as well as foreign experts should be consulted. If these threats are not taken seriously and timely measures are not taken, severe climatic events may be seen in the future.
